#739 Caravaggio

Year: 1986

Director: Derek Jarman

Cinematography: Gabriel Beristain

Screenplay: Derek Jarman, Suso Cecchi d’Amico with story by Nicholas Ward-Jackson

Music: Simon Fisher-Turner

Staring: Nigel Terry, Sean Bean, Tilda Swinton

Synopsis: A semi-biographical story of the Baroque painter, Caravaggio.

Reasons to watch:

The films style, common to many Jarman films is very tight, there are no sweeping architectural shots or panoramic views of 16th century Italy. This gives the film a very character driven story. Not to mention the reproduction and re-staging of many of his paintings are fantastic.

The not-so-strict approach to historical accuracy is quite enjoyable in my opinion.

Tilda Swinton.
